What Is a Life Coach?

You’ve probably heard the term before, but you may have never taken the time to really think about what it means! A life coach can be an invaluable mentor, someone to help get your life moving in the direction you’d like it to move, someone who can fill in the gaps left by family experience and education and help you stay oriented.

A life coach is not, to begin with, a therapist – a life coach works with specific goals and projects in your life, aiming to help you see them to completion. They work with you on a very practical level to help you achieve your goals and desires. Where a therapist tends to work more with analysis and learning, a life coach can work in these roles and more. Consultant, friend, confidant, and motivator, a life coach is essentially whatever you want them to be, and is trained to help people make the most out of their daily decisions.

We all have projects and goals we haven’t met or completed yet, and one of the things a life coach does is help determine what your specific goals are. You may not even know yourself at the outset, or you may only have a vague idea of something you want to do, experience, or learn; it is part of a life coach’s job to show you the specific steps you need to get there and part of their job to check up on you and keep you moving toward your goal.
